The Musée Maillol in Banyuls-sur-Mer, managed by the Dina Vierny Foundation, is located in the country house of the sculptor Aristide Maillol, where he liked to come to work and rest. It is a small isolated farmhouse in the Roume valley, 4 km from the center of Banyuls-sur-Mer, the artist’s native village in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The valley surrounding the place has been classified, at the request of Dina Vierny, in order to preserve the calm and beauty of the place.
In accordance with the artist’s wishes, his remains were moved there in 1964, twenty years after his death, to rest under his emblematic sculpture: Méditerranée (1905). It was only much later, thanks to the combined actions of Dina Vierny and the town of Banyuls-sur-Mer, that the small farmhouse was restored and transformed to accommodate a museum dedicated to Maillol, which opened in 1994.
The museum presents numerous works by Maillol (bronzes, ceramics, paintings, lithographs, etc.) as well as the sculptor’s daily life in the Métairie. Temporary exhibitions, devoted to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, are organised there every year.
